Neuropsychological Assessments

Neuropsychological Assessments services offered in Boulder, Longmont, Niwot, Colorado

Are you working with an older adult concerned about recent memory decline, with a parent whose child was recently diagnosed with ADHD who wonders if they too have ADHD, or a young adult struggling at work or in relationships because of social difficulties? Please give us a call to see if an assessment could help inform your treatment approach and move your client the their next stage of treatment and living

When you participate in an assessment you will learn answers to the specific questions you and your treatment team have raised. These might be diagnostic questions that guide your work with your therapist or your medication management or they might be questions that you and your family members have that pertain to prognosis, financial or living planning, or staging of disease.

What are neuropsychological assessments?

Neuropsychological assessments are data-driven tests that evaluate several different brain functions, including:

  • Language usage
  • Attention
  • Reading
  • Learning
  • Processing speed
  • Reasoning
  • Remembering
  • General intellect
  • Attention and concentration
  • Organization, time management, and self-control
  • Mood and personality
  • Problem-solving

You may undergo testing to establish a baseline of mental wellness before surgery or a procedure or to evaluate mental decline. The results of your neuropsychological assessment inform treatment plans following brain trauma or degenerative mental conditions by identifying your cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

Why would I need a neuropsychological assessment?

Neuropsychological assessments help in the diagnosis of many mental health conditions, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, and dementia.

Your provider may recommend the assessment if you have symptoms such as:

  • Changes in short-term memory
  • Frequently losing items or getting lost often
  • General confusion
  • Poor attention and concentration
  • Difficulty understanding what others say or finding the right words to communicate
  • Inability to recognize familiar objects or people
  • Trouble using a map or drawing visuals
  • Delusional thinking or hallucinations
  • Newfound trouble managing money or finances
  • Changes in personality or increased depression or anxiety
  • Poor judgment

The testing gives insight and guidance to you and your family when it comes to your treatment and understanding your behaviors.

The results of your assessment also help your provider identify which cognitive abilities should be the focus of rehabilitation if you’ve had a brain injury.

What happens during a neuropsychological assessment?

Your provider talks with you and your loved ones to understand what concerns there are about your mental function. You’ll also undergo a review of your mental health and physical health history.

Based on these findings, your provider recommends which tests are right for you. The tests are given and scored by a trained technician. You’ll be asked to write, draw, solve puzzles, and answer questions. Questions about your mood and psychological symptoms are also part of the assessment.

Loved ones may also be asked to complete questionnaires as part of the process.

If you believe you or a loved one would benefit from a neuropsychological assessment, call Amavi Integrative Mental Wellness today or use this website to schedule a consultation online.
