Millions of Americans struggle with the feelings of despair, sadness, and hopelessness associated with depression. Depression (also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working.

What is depression?

It’s normal to have periods of disappointment, frustration, sadness, or emptiness, especially following a major event like a death or divorce. Persistent, debilitating mental sadness that changes how you feel, think, and act is something more than an episode of the “blues.”

Depression is a chronic, health-altering mental condition that can threaten your well-being, relationships, and life.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Symptoms of depression include overwhelming sadness that persists for several weeks. In addition, you might experience:

  • Feelings of hopelessness or guilt
  • A loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
  • An extreme lack of energy
  • Slowed speech and movements
  • Changes in weight and appetite
  • Issues with concentration and focus
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

If you notice any of these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, it could indicate depression. Depression and anxiety often go hand-in-hand. You may suffer excessive worry, paranoia, and panic attacks along with depressive symptoms.

What causes depression?

Depression doesn’t always have just one cause. It may arise due to:

  • Genetics
  • Irregularities in brain chemistry
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Physical or sexual abuse
  • Post-pregnancy (postpartum depression)
  • Certain medications
  • Chronic disease, like cancer or diabetes
  • Alcohol or drug abuse

Depression may also arise due to other mood disorders, including bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

What’s the treatment for depression?

At Amavi, your provider will work with you to determine the best treatment plan. The first line of treatment is often antidepressant medications and psychotherapy.
