Medication Management

Boulder CO Medication Management

Medication Management services offered in Boulder, Longmont, Niwot, Colorado

Medication can play an important role in treating mental health disorders, and is often used in combination with other treatment approaches such as psychotherapy. Expert medication management helps you acheive positive results while minimizing unwanted side effects. At Amavi our skilled and compassionate providers work with you to determine the best medications based on your diagnosis and genetic profile.

Psychiatric medication includes all drugs which can be prescribed to:

  • treat different types of mental health problem
  • reduce the symptoms of mental health problems
  • prevent the return of mental health problems and their symptoms (also known as relapse).

What is involved in medication management?

Expert medication management can be an essential part of a robust mental health plan, and the providers at Amavi Integrative Mental Wellness work closely with you to develop a medication regimen that helps you achieve your wellness goals.

At Amavi Integrative Mental Wellness, your provider bases medication choices on your history, diagnosis, and current symptoms, and may use pharmacogenomic testing to guide treatment. Pharmacogenetic testing is a simple test that uses information about your genetic makeup to guide medication selection and dosing, and can help your provider understand how well certain medications will work for you and whether you’re at a greater risk of side effects.

Types of Psychiatric Medications

Antidepressants

Antidepressants are medications used to treat depression. In some cases, your Amavi provider may prescribe antidepressants to treat other health conditions such as anxiety, pain, and insomnia.

Commonly prescribed types of antidepressants include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs).

These medications are commonly prescribed because they improve symptoms related to a broad group of depressive and anxiety disorders and are associated with fewer side effects than older types of antidepressants. Although older antidepressant medications, such as tricyclics and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), are associated with more side effects, they may be the best option for some people.

Anti-anxiety medications

You may be prescribed anti-anxiety medications to reduce the frequency and severity of panic attacks and ease extreme worry. Many medications commonly used to treat depression—including SSRIs and SNRIs—may also be used to treat anxiety. In the case of panic disorder or social anxiety disorder, your provider may typically start with SSRIs or other antidepressants as the first treatment because they have fewer side effects than other medications.

Another common type of anti-anxiety medication is benzodiazepines. As short-term treatments, benzodiazepines may be used as needed to reduce severe anxiety. Taking benzodiazepines over long periods may lead to drug tolerance or dependence. To avoid these problems, the providers at Amavi typically prescribe benzodiazepines for short periods and taper them slowly to reduce the likelihood that you will experience withdrawal symptoms or renewed anxiety symptoms.

Ketamine

The providers at Amvi Integrative Mental Wellness prescribe compounded ketamine to treat depressive disorders that are resistant to other, more conventional forms of treatment.

Ketamine can affect the brain receptors that control pain and mood. It binds to these receptors to regulate the production of a neurotransmitter known as glutamate. This creates better balance in your brain to ease the symptoms of depression.

Stimulants

If you have a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) your provider may prescribe a stimulant medication.  Stimulants increase alertness, attention, and energy, and can markedly improve daily functioning for people with ADHD. Although motor hyperactivity associated with ADHD in children often goes away by the time they reach adolescence, people with ADHD may continue to experience inattention and difficulty with focus into adulthood. As such, stimulant medications can be helpful for adults with ADHD.

Antipsychotics

Antipsychotics developed in the mid-20th century are often referred to as first-generation or typical antipsychotics, while antipsychotics developed more recently are referred to as second-generation or atypical antipsychotics. These medications reduce or eliminate symptoms of psychosis (delusions and hallucinations) by affecting the brain chemical called dopamine.

All antipsychotics play a vital role in treating schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Second-generation antipsychotics can also be used to treat acute mania, bipolar disorder and major depression.

Mood stabillizers

Mood stabilizers are typically used to treat bipolar disorder and are sometimes used to treat depression, schizoaffective disorder, disorders of impulse control, and other mental health conditions.
